Sew for Sisterhood is a locally led initiative helping young Maasai women in Kilgoris, Kenya build sustainable livelihoods. Implemented in partnership with Dupoto Flourish Africa, a Maasai-founded community-based organization, the 12-month program combines vocational and business skills with confidence building and awareness of women’s rights. Since 2024, 90 women and girls have participated across three cohorts.

The program is producing measurable results. Among 2025 graduates, 73% are earning income using skills gained through the program, while 90% report increased confidence.

Beyond technical training, Sew for Sisterhood creates safe spaces to discuss gender-based violence, early marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). Participants help shape the program through feedback, while graduates return as mentors and role models. Community dialogues also engage families, elders and local leaders to strengthen support for girls’ education and women’s economic independence.

Sew for Sisterhood continues to evolve based on graduate outcomes and feedback. Follow-up identified access to tools and materials as a key barrier to earning income after graduation. The program’s next phase is being developed to address these barriers through shared sewing equipment, access to startup capital, market linkages and continued business support, creating a stronger pathway from training to sustainable livelihoods.

We’re excited to share that Sew for Sisterhood was recently featured on a local news channel. Watch the coverage from the graduation celebration here.
