School Feeding & Gardening Program

This school-based gardening and feeding program helps primary schools in Northern Uganda grow food on campus, improving student nutrition, attendance, and learning while teaching practical agricultural skills.

$0.00 donated

The School Feeding and Gardening Program is implemented in partnership with Lutino Adunu in Nwoya District, Northern Uganda. The project supports primary schools to establish and maintain school gardens that provide meals for students while serving as hands-on learning spaces for agriculture, environmental management, and climate resilience.

The pilot project was implemented at Cuku Primary School and St. Peter Bwonbonam Primary School in Alero Sub County. With GO Fund support, the schools planted maize, beans, and green vegetables, and received seeds, tools, and training in good agronomic practices. Local stakeholders, including school management committees, parents, and sub-county agriculture officers, were actively involved to encourage long-term ownership and local government engagement.

As a result, access to school meals increased dramatically. At St. Peter Bwonbonam, the number of pupils eating at school grew from 20 to 487, while Cuku Primary increased from 8 to 312 pupils. School leaders reported improved attendance and no student dropouts during the project year. Surplus vegetables were sold locally, with proceeds reinvested into seeds for future planting, supporting sustainability beyond the initial funding.
